Eyeglasses in Kitchener for Christmas?

Christmas is right around the corner, which means if you haven’t started thinking about what you’re going to give to your friends, family, and/or loved ones, you should start now. If you know that the person you’re buying a gift for wears glasses or has had the same pair of glasses for some time (if you can tell their lenses are scuffed up, it probably means they’re getting up there in age), then getting them a new pair of glasses can be a thoughtful present. If you do decide to buy eyeglasses in Kitchener, then there’s no better place to get them than at KW Vision Centre in Kitchener.

Purchasing Eyeglasses as a Christmas Gift

There are a lot of ways that you can buy eyeglasses in Kitchener as a Christmas present for a friend or loved one. For example, if you have a pretty good idea of what they like and what their style is, you could buy a pair of frames to put under the Christmas tree. Once they open them, you can take them into our store to have them fitted with their prescription lenses. You’ll find that we carry a massive variety of different frames here at KW Vision Centre, which means you’ll have no trouble finding something no matter what style you’re looking for.

If you’re a little unsure about the type of frame to get, then you could always pick up a gift certificate. Then they can come in on their own time to take a look at the eyeglasses that we carry.

Sunglasses as Christmas Gifts

Eyeglasses aren’t the only thing we carry. If the person you’re buying a Christmas gift for already has a new pair of eyeglasses, then why not pick up a pair of stylish sunglasses for them instead? Even if they already have a pair of sunglasses, having an extra pair of shades is always a great idea.

Not only do we carry a wide range of different sunglasses, we offer numerous options to enhance the lenses. For example, you can choose to have the sunglasses fitted with gradient lenses, which have a particularly fashionable look or choose sunglasses with polarized lenses to help reduce glare.

If you’re looking for Christmas gifts for friends, family, or loved ones, consider picking up some eyeglasses in Kitchener here at KW Vision Centre. To find out about the many types and brands of eyeglasses and sunglasses we carry, contact us at KW Vision Centre today.

Optometrists in Kitchener Celebrate the Season

0

Here at KW Vision Centre, we love the end of the year because of the holiday spirit that everyone has. One of the reasons this spirit permeates throughout our community is because so many different holidays are celebrated by so many different religions and cultures throughout the end of the year. Kitchener is a very multi-cultural community, which means that like the people that live here, optometrists in Kitchener celebrate several different holidays. The following are some of the holidays that we celebrate, whether in practice or in a shared spirit, with the community:

  1. Christmas – Christmas is the Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ that takes place on December 25th every year. It’s traditionally celebrated by acts of gift giving to friends and family as well as the decoration of a small spruce or pine tree.
  2. Hanukkah – Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days in the month of December. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah goes back to 165 BC as a commemoration of the rededication and purification of the Temple following the victory over Greek Syrians by the Jews. As part of the celebration, a candle on a menorah is lit every day.
  3. Kwanzaa – Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration that begins on December 26th and lasts until January 1st. Each day, a Kinara is lit, which is not too different from the practice of lighting a menorah during Hanukkah. However, Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday; instead, it’s a celebration of African culture and heritage. Each day represents a different principle.
  4. Bodhi Day – Boddhi day celebrates the awakening of the Buddha under the Bodhi tree. While this day varies based on the type of Buddhist religion, Japan Bodhi Day takes place on December 8th. Every Bodhi Day, practitioners decorate a ficus tree using lights and beads, which is similar to the decoration of the Christmas tree.
  5. New Year’s – Unlike other holidays, New Year’s is the one holiday that is celebrated by everyone here in Kitchener no matter what religion! It’s a holiday meant to reflect on the past year and to look forward to new beginnings, and one that everyone can enjoy.

All optometrists in Kitchener look forward to celebrating the festive spirit brought on by all of these holidays this year. If you need to book an appointment or are looking for new eyeglasses (perhaps as a holiday gift), contact us anytime here at KW Vision Centre.

5 Myths about Eyeglasses

0
0

If you’re taking advantage of 2 for 1 eyeglasses in Kitchener, you may have some questions. Whether you’re new to wearing glasses or have been bespectacled for years, you may have heard some of these common myths that we’re about to explore. If you have any questions about your eyeglasses, it’s best to go straight to the source, your eye doctor. But in the meantime, here are five myths about eyeglasses to watch out for.

1. Eyeglasses Don’t Work With Some Face Shapes- FALSE

Don’t let anyone tell you glasses won’t work for your face. That’s just not true. When looking for your choices for our 2 for 1 eyeglasses in Kitchener deal, you’ll discover that we have a large variety of different shaped frames in different materials and colours. While it’s true that you may have to experiment with different pairs until you find one right for you, there are eyeglasses out there that will work for every particular face shape.

2. You Can Train Your Eyes to See Better- FALSE

If you need glasses, no amount of eye exercises or online research will improve your vision. The only way to see properly again is to wear glasses or contacts.

3. Wearing the Wrong Prescription Will Damage Your Eyes- FALSE

Wearing the wrong prescription will not allow you to see properly and could cause headaches, but it will not damage your eyes.

4. Wearing Glasses Changes Your Eyes- FALSE

Eyeglasses change your vision, not your eyes. While wearing glasses will improve your eyesight and allow you to do everyday things easier, they will not slowly improve or decrease your version permanently. Factors like age and genetics affect your eyesight, not how often you wear your glasses.

5. You Should Allow Your Eyes to Rest and Remove Your Glasses- FALSE

If you are prescribed eyeglasses, you should be wearing them anytime you are awake and moving around unless your eye doctor has said otherwise. Your eyes do not become “tired” from wearing glasses. In fact, the opposite is true. When you wear your eyeglasses, your eyes do not have to strain to see like they would without them.

BONUS myth no. 5.5 No, there is no such thing as X-Ray Glasses. X-Ray Specs are a novelty item, suppose to allow the user to see through or into solid objects. In reality the glasses merely create an optical illusion; no X-rays are involved. X-Ray Specs consist of an outsized pair of glasses with plastic frames and white cardboard “lenses” printed with concentric red circles, and emblazoned with the legend “X-RAY VISION”.The “lenses” consist of two layers of cardboard with a small hole about 6 millimetres in diameter punched through both layers. The user views objects through the holes. A feather is embedded between the layers of each lens. The vanes of the feathers are so close together that light is diffracted, causing the user to receive two slightly offset images. For instance, if viewing a pencil, one would see two offset images of the pencil. Where the images overlap, a darker image is obtained, supposedly giving the illusion that one is seeing the graphite embedded within the body of the pencil. As may be imagined, the illusion is not particularly convincing 😉

We hope you have learned a few new things about eyeglasses today. Don’t fall for these five “and a half” common myths about eyeglasses!

If you have any questions while searching for your 2 for 1 eyeglasses in Kitchener be sure to ask the professionals at KW Vision Centre, contact us today.

Is Winter Sun more Dangerous than the Summer Sun?

0
0

People tend to associate temperatures with the exposure that they have to the sun. It’s why when summer rolls around, everyone makes sure to put on plenty of sunscreen lotion and to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. They mistakenly think that once temperatures drop, the dangers of exposure to the sun drops as well. However, this is not true. Not only can sunlight still damage your eyes if they’re too exposed to the light, the sun can actually be more damaging to your eyes during the winters than during the summers.

The Winter Sun Can Still Be Dangerous

One of the reasons why people assume that the winter sun won’t pose nearly as big of a risk to the health of their eyes as the summer sun is due to the fact that winter days are often overcast. But just because the sunlight doesn’t appear to be directly hitting your eyes doesn’t mean that it’s not causing your eyes damage.

First of all, it’s the UV rays of the sun that cause damage to your eyes. UV rays will penetrate overcast clouds, which means that even if it’s not sunny outside, you will still be exposed. Secondly, the presence of snow can actually increase the potential harm that the sun’s UV rays can cause. This is because snow reflects 80 percent of the UV rays that it encounters. As a result, if you’re enjoying a winter activity involving snow, such as skiing, snowboarding, or even just building a snowman, you may be more vulnerable to UV ray exposure than you may have been during the summer.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re going up high to enjoy these winter activities (such as up a mountain), it means that you will have less atmosphere to filter the UV rays. For roughly every 400 metres higher you are, the exposure to UV rays increases by 18 percent.

Wear Sunglasses in the Winter

The best way to protect yourself against the potential harm that UV rays can cause to your eyes in the winter months is by wearing sunglasses. If you’re going out in the snow for prolonged periods of time, wearing sunglasses is a smart choice, even if it’s overcast.

Be sure to wear sunglasses in Kitchener during the winter season. For information about our sunglasses, speak to an eye specialist in Kitchener by contacting us at KW Vision Centre today.

When looking for an optometrist in Kitchener, several different factors make some offices stand out from the rest. Discount eyeglasses stores will claim to give you cheap exams and even cheaper glasses, but when it comes to your vision, do you really want to go to a chain store? Here at KW Vision Centre, your vision is our top priority, and the services we offer reflect that. Here’s a closer look at what makes us the best choice for your vision needs.

Professional Eye Exams

During your professional eye exam at KW Vision Centre, our optometrist will asses your vision using a variety of the latest technology in eye equipment and techniques. We will evaluate your vision with your current eyeglasses or contact lens prescription and update if necessary. Your doctor will not only address your vision but the overall health of your eyes. A high powered microscope will be used to examine the entire structure of both your eyes. This process can detect the early stages of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and chronic dry eye. Your optometrist may also dilate your pupils using special drops that will allow them to view the more complex structures of your eyes. Dilation does cause light sensitivity for a few hours, so bring your sunglasses to your appointment.

Glasses or Contacts in One Hour

Our eye exams are free with the purchase of a pair of eyeglasses and that amazing deal is made even better when you can get your new glasses within an hour. Most eyeglasses and contact lens are available within an hour after your exam, with some exceptions for specialty prescriptions. No waiting weeks for your updated prescription eyewear. You’ll be able to leave your appointment with perfect vision.

Order Contact Lens Online

If your contact lens prescription is up to date, you can skip the trip to our office and order your contacts online through our site. Need an updated prescription or are curious about trying contacts for the first time? Make an appointment and we’d be happy to help you find the perfect contacts for your eyes. At KW Vision Centre, we only carry the best contact brands that offer comfort and breathability.

Are you looking for an optometrist in Kitchener? Give KW Vision Centre a try. With all our exceptional services and professional care, let us take care of all your vision needs.

What an Optometrist in Kitchener Wants You to Know

0
0

Unfortunately, many people tend to take their vision for granted – until there’s a problem. That’s when they call the eye doctor. What optometrists want you to know is that there are many things you can do to protect your vision health before there’s an issue. These steps can help to protect your vision and to detect potential problems before they worsen.

Here’s a look at the top things KW Vision Centre, your optometrist in Kitchener wants you to know about your vision health.

Eye Exams Are for Everyone

Regular eye exams are the most crucial step you can take to safeguard your vision, even if you have near perfect vision. Your eyesight will change over the years, and it’s essential to update your eyeglass or contact prescription regularly.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children should have their first eye exam before they’re two years old, and another eye exam before they’re five. Other children and teenagers, along with seniors over 65 should have annual exams, while those between 20-64 can go two to three years between appointments. If you experience any vision issues, such as vision loss, blurred vision, flashing lights, or floaters, you should make an appointment with your optometrist as soon as possible.

There’s More to An Eye Exam than a Vision Test

What you may not realize is that eye exams include more than just a vision test. An optometrist in Kitchener will also use this time to check for other serious problems, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. An eye exam can even reveal other health issues, such as thyroid problems and heart disease. The sooner your eye doctor can detect a health and vision issue the more treatment options may be available.

Sunglasses Are a Must

Many people don’t realize it, but the sun’s UV rays can damage your eyes over time. In fact, unprotected exposure to the sun can put you at higher risk for various eye conditions, including macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye cancer. Optometrists recommend wearing sunglasses with 100 percent UVB and UVA protection.

Smoking Can Affect Your Vision

Smoking can put you at higher risk for a variety of health issues, including vision disorders like cataracts and macular degeneration. If you smoke, it’s important to tell your eye doctor to discuss your potential risks. Fortunately, studies show that people who quit smoking significantly reduce their risk for these eye conditions.

Don’t risk the future of your vision health. Instead, schedule a regular eye exam with us at KW Vision Centre, your optometrist in Kitchener, today. Not only will this step ensure you have the right eyeglasses and/or contacts, but it can help prevent permanent damage to your eyes. Call or contact us today!

4 Most common eye diseases for Canadians

0
0

Scheduling a professional eye exam with an optometrist in Kitchener is something that you should do on a regular basis. Not only will an eye exam determine if your vision has worsened (thereby allowing you to pick up the right prescription eyeglasses), but an eye exam can also help to identify potential eye diseases. It’s estimated that roughly 4.25 million Canadians have a serious eye disease and many of them don’t even realize it. As a result, the following are four of the most common eye diseases that you’ll want to be checked for:

  1. AMD – AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is known as the most common cause behind vision loss for people over the age of 50. It’s caused by the thinning of the macula, which is the part of your retina that’s responsible for clear vision in your direct line of sight. AMD can cause blurriness, difficulty adapting to low light levels, decreased brightness of colours, and more. There are two main types: dry macular degeneration, which happens over time, and wet macular degeneration, which happens suddenly.
  2. Cataracts – Cataracts occur when the lens of your eye begins to cloud. It often appears as if you’re looking through a foggy window. Cataracts develop slowly over time, which is why a lot of people don’t realize they have it until their vision worsens significantly. Symptoms include clouded or blurred vision, sensitivity to light, difficulty with night vision, and more.
  3. Diabetic retinopathy – Diabetic retinopathy is a complication that occurs to people with diabetes. It causes damage to the blood vessels of the tissue in the retina. At first, patients experience mild vision problems. However, as it progresses, it can cause complete blindness.
  4. Glaucoma – Glaucoma is particularly dangerous because there are no mild symptoms leading up to what can result in permanent vision loss. It’s a condition in which high pressure within the eye causes damage to the optic nerve. This damage results in the loss of peripheral vision and permanent vision loss.

By diagnosing one of these common eye diseases in the early stages, there’s a chance that you can prevent it from getting worse and from affecting your vision. At the very least, you may be able to take steps to help prevent permanent vision loss. To schedule a professional eye exam, be sure to speak with a reputable optometrist in Kitchener by contacting us at KW Vision Centre today.

Eye specialists recommend these healthy foods

0

If you don’t take care of yourself, your health will deteriorate. This is true for every part of your body, including your eyes. A lot of people think that eyesight is something that diminishes naturally; however, if you take care of your eyes, you could prevent many of the issues that plague the eyes in old age. For example, there are certain foods that you should add to your diet to help preserve your eye health. The following are some of the foods that a good eye specialist in Kitchener will recommend to help prevent poor eye health:

  • Fish – Most fish, including tuna, salmon, trout, and sardines, contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 is known to have all kinds of health benefits. As far as eye health goes, omega-3 can help to protect your eyes from macular degeneration as well as dry eye syndrome. Omega-3 has also been linked to helping the eye properly drain intraocular fluid, which helps to reduce the risk of high eye pressure and glaucoma.
  • Citrus fruits – Citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons, contain lots of vitamin C, which can help to fight age-related eye damage.
  • Carrots – Carrots are full of vitamin A and beta carotene. Vitamin A is rhodopsin, which is a component of protein that helps the eye’s retina to absorb light. By making sure you get enough vitamin A, you’ll help maintain a clear cornea. Beta carotene is needed by the body to produce vitamin A naturally.
  • Nuts, legumes, and seeds – Like fish, nuts, legumes, and seeds are all rich in omega-3. They also have high levels of vitamin E.
  • Leafy green vegetables – All vegetables are good for you, but leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards, are particularly beneficial. This is because they are packed with vitamin C as well as with lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the macula of the eye. By adding these nutrients to your diet, you could potentially reduce the risk of macular degeneration as well as cataracts.

These are foods that should be added to every diet. In fact, not only can they help preserve your eyesight, but they can also help improve your body’s health overall. For more advice on how to maintain your eye health or to schedule an appointment to see an eye specialist in Kitchener, be sure to contact us at KW Vision Centre today.

Is There an Optometrist in Kitchener Near Me?

The health of your eyes affects your entire life. Your eyes guide you through your everyday life, and you may not realize how vitally important they are until something is wrong. In order to take proper care of your optical health, it’s essential to see an optometrist regularly. Read on to learn why seeing an optometrist in Kitchener on a regular basis is important for your eye health.

Detect Vision Changes

It is very common for an individual’s vision to change periodically throughout their lifetime. Your vision could change minutely or drastically at different times in your life, regardless of overall health or age. Without proper vision correction, like contact lens or eyeglasses, your vision could deteriorate and other health issues could arise like headaches or fatigue. An optometrist in Kitchener will be able to conduct a proper eye exam to catch any changes in your vision so they can be corrected accordingly.

Increased Productivity

When you have healthy eyes that are functioning properly with corrective vision wear if necessary, your productivity, whether it is in school or work, is increased. Proper vision is especially essential for young children at school. Since children may not recognize vision changes as they’re happening, it is essential for parents to have their children’s vision checked periodically, possibly more often is there have been drastic vision changes in the past.

Prevent Eye Disease

Serious optical diseases like glaucoma are often not caught until it causes severe vision changes. Regular eye exams by an optometrist is the best way to catch this hard to detect health concern so it can be treated immediately. Besides glaucoma, other serious health concerns like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even cancer can be detected in a routine eye exam.

Growing Instances of Myopia

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming more and more common. Although nearsightedness is easily corrected with eyeglasses or contact lens, it needs to be watched closely by an optometrist throughout the patient’s life. Myopia increases a person’s risk of developing other eye concerns like cataracts or retinal detachment. Routine eye exams are the only way to diagnose myopia.

Bring Your Child to Your Optometrist

Experts say a significant portion of learning in children under the age 13 occurs visually – about 80%. This realisation underscores the importance of ensuring that your child has good vision right from an early age. Although children’s vision eye problems are common, detection at an early age can greatly help in managing or treating most conditions and ensuring that their learning is not affected. However, most children’s vision problems are not easily detectable as they lack pronounced signs and symptoms. As such, having routine comprehensive eye exams performed by an optometrist is the surest way of ensuring your kids have good visual skills to facilitate their learning in school. Therefore, the next time you are visiting your optometrist in Kitchener, bring your kids along, they need it too.

Why is it Important for Your Child to Have Eye Exams?

Early childhood eye exams are essential to ensure normal visual development and confirm that there are no vision problems that might hinder learning when the child reaches school age or later on in life. We now know that good vision is essential for optimal learning and development in children. Additionally, having that children are exposed to electronic devices earlier than ever before, it follows that routine eye exams are more important than ever before. Pay close attention to your child’s eyes right from infancy. If they are born with an eye condition, early detection and treatment can help them avoid further complications later on in life. Some vision issues such as lazy eye can even be completely reversed with proper early treatment.

When Should Your Child Have Their First Eye Exam?

CAO, the (Canadian Association of Optometrists) recommends that the first eye exam for children should be when they are between 6 and 9 months of age. Although this exam is not as extensive and comprehensive as with the older children and adults, the optometrists perform necessary tests to ensure your child’s eyes are healthy and that there are no evident problems that might hinder normal visual development.

How Often Should Your Child Visit an Optometrist?

CAO also recommends that children should receive eye exams throughout their school years. According to the institution, pre-school children should get the second eye exam between 2 and 5 years of age after which the children should undergo an exam annually until they are 19 years old.

If a child is diagnosed with vision problems and prescribed corrective eyewear, they should have eye exams annually particularly if they wear contact lenses. The optometrist may recommend more frequent eye exams if your child is exposed to special risk factors for eye problems.

5 Ways to Protect Your Eyes in the Winter Sun

0
0

Some people absolutely love winter while others cannot wait for it to be over. Regardless of where you fall on this debate, it is well documented that prolonged cold weather, dry air and bright sunlight during winter can wreak havoc on your health and body. This is particularly true of eyes which are delicate and easily affected by the environment. So, below are some tips on how to protect your eyes during this winter and to ensure that your next visit to an eye specialist in Kitchener goes smoothly without any surprises.

Wear Sunglasses

While the sun may not always be out during the winter, you can be sure that it’s still there and still very potent. This means that you still have to protect yourself from UV exposure even on the coldest days. Look for sunglasses that block above 99% of UVB and UVA radiation. This will reduce your susceptibility to eye-related issues such as glaucoma, cataracts as well as retina diseases such as muscular degeneration.

Wear a Hat

Wearing a hat with a wide brim will block UV rays from hitting your face and therefore reduce UV exposure.

Keep Your Eyes Moist

This is a season of dry air. Be it from cold winds outside or indoor furnace heat, this cold air is known to cause eye irritation or aggravate the dry eye condition. Keep moisturizing drops close by to help you deal with the seasonal dryness. Additionally, use a humidifier to maintain moisture in the room air.

Practice Good Hygiene

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, is more common during the winter. This is a contagious infection that easily spreads from person to person through contact. Places like doorknobs, elevator buttons or cash machines could harbour virus or bacteria. The condition can also spread from one eye to the other. Therefore, protect your eyes by frequently washing your hands. Avoid touching your eyes as much as possible. If you suspect you have pinkeye, make an appointment with your eye specialist in Kitchener for immediate treatment and to protect the people close to you.

Visit an Optometrist

Make an appointment with an optometrist who can evaluate your vision, diagnose winter-related eye conditions such as dry eye and pinkeye and provide treatment or ways to manage the health of your eyes.

The tips above should help you protect your eyes from the winter sun as you enjoy the winter or mark off your calendar waiting for spring. If you need more information on how you can protect your eyes this winter, or need to schedule an appointment with an eye specialist in Kitchener, talk to KW Vision Centre today.

5 Pro Tips on how to choose glasses

0
0

Although our eye specialist in Kitchener can help identify what types of lenses you need for your eyeglasses, it’s going to be largely up to you when it comes to choosing frames for those glasses. Fortunately, we offer a large variety of different frames and our specialists are more than happy to provide their professional advice to make choosing your eyeglasses as easy as possible.

In fact, the following are five tips that we recommend keeping in mind when choosing a new pair of eyeglasses:

  1. Choose frames that contrast your face shape – The general rule of thumb for choosing what style of frames to go with is to choose the opposite of your face shape. For example, if you have a very angular or square face, then round frames are a good fit. If you have a round face, consider going with a pair of rectangular frames.
  2. Choose frame size based on face shape – If you have an oval face, don’t use larger frames that will cover half of your face.
  3. Choose frames that center your eyes – If your eyes appear too close to the inner corner of the frames, it will make you look cross-eyed. If your eyes appear too far towards the outside corners of the frames, then it will make the glasses look too small. If your eyes happen to be slightly narrow set, then you should avoid a pair of frames that are too wide.
  4. Choose frames that fit your nose – Because you’ll be wearing your eyeglasses often, you’ll want to make sure that they are a comfortable fit. Avoid glasses that constantly slip down your nose, that leave red marks on your nose, or that cause your eyelashes to touch the lenses. One way that you can tell if they will fit your face is by shaking your head. If the frames move as you shake your head, they are too big.
  5. Choose frame colour based on your skin tone – If your skin tone is warm, then avoid frames in pastel colours. Choose a frame in a light colour instead. If you have a cooler complexion, then black, gray, blue, and silver are all good options.

Use these five tips to help you choose the right eyeglasses for you or your loved one. For information about the frames that we carry or to book an appointment with an eye specialist in Kitchener, be sure to contact us at KW Vision Centre today.

Precautions for Contact Lens Users during COVID-19 Challenges

The coronavirus (CoV), scientifically referred to as SARS-CoV-2, which causes the COVID 19 disease has posed the biggest global challenge in modern history. Although research is still ongoing, we currently know that the disease is mainly transmitted through contact with the eyes, nose and mouth. So, what does this mean for a person who uses contact lenses? Are people who wear contact lenses at greater risk? What can you do to protect yourself?

According to the Contact Lens Journal, there is currently no scientific evidence to suggest that you are at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 if you wear contact lenses as opposed to wearing standard prescription spectacles – or any viral infection. However, there is consensus by all medical practitioners that everyone should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with their hands regardless. So, how can you protect yourself as a person who wears contact lenses?

Essential Guidelines for People Who Wear Contact Lenses during COVID-19

  • Thoroughly wash your hands with an alcohol-based detergent before fitting contact lenses
  • Always wash your hands with an alcohol-based detergent when fitting or removing contact lenses between one eye and the other one.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after finishing the fitting procedure
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after removing contact lenses
  • You can also use disposable latex gloves when applying and removing contact lenses and immediately discard them
  • Apply and remove contact lenses on a disposable towel and discard it immediately
  • Use disposable contact lenses and discard them immediately after the wear period if possible
  • Be wary not to touch your mouth and nose when applying or removing contact lenses
  • Observe the expiration dates of contact lenses and act accordingly
  • Routinely disinfect contact lenses using our cleaning solutions or hydrogen peroxide solution
  • Do not use multipurpose saline or preservative solutions
  • Frequently change the contact lenses container solution
  • Use enzymatic tablets to perform cleaning once a week to deter the adhesion of mucoprotein deposits
  • If you use artificial tears, opt for single-dose products
  • Suspend the use of contact lenses in case of eye redness or any symptoms such as cough, fever, absence of smell and taste, muscle pain and others.

Also,

Note that the virus can also be deposited on the surface of glasses when used in a contaminated environment. Therefore, wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your glasses and often wash them with liquid neutral soap from a non-contact dispenser while being careful not to damage the lenses.

Conclusion

While the risk of ocular transmission of COVID-19 is minimal, everyone who wears contact lenses needs to take all necessary precautions to avoid the possibility of infection. We are a major provider of contact lenses in Kitchener. To learn more about how to protect yourself and your loved ones during these uncertain times, contact us anytime.

Focus On Eye Care During The Coronavirus Pandemic

0
0

We’re in the tenth month of a global pandemic. One thing that’s been reiterated by health institutions like WHO, CDC, and even your local optometrist in Kitchener, is that you should avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible, especially if you haven’t washed or sanitized your hands.

Face masks have proven effective in the fight against the spread of COVID-19, especially in public spaces. However, there’s a slight disparity in the way that civilians and medical professionals protect themselves.

People on the frontline go a step further to protect themselves by wearing goggles or face shields to protect their eyes.

This begs the question: how important is it to care for your eyes during a pandemic?

The Scary Truth

When a respiratory virus comes into contact with your unprotected eyes, one of two things might happen. The eyes can get infected, in which case, it’s called conjunctivitis, or the viruses can travel down the passage connecting the eyes and the nasal cavity, then to your lungs, causing a full-blown respiratory infection.

Before you start panic-buying face shields and goggles, keep in mind that the coronavirus is not airborne. There are only two ways you can get infected, and one of them is unlikely to happen if you observe proper social distance:

  • If someone sneezes or coughs into your eyes, or;
  • If you unwittingly touch an infected surface then touching your eyes.

Viruses Aren’t the Only Thing That Can Harm Your Eyes

While regular disinfecting may be the only way to navigate your new virus-ridden world, it doesn’t bode well for your eyes.

Alcohol, which we now come into contact on a daily basis, is a severe irritant that can even damage the surface of the eye. We put it on our hands daily, so imagine how easy it is to accidentally get some in your eyes!

Aside from alcohol, many chemicals used to manufacture hand sanitizers and cleaning solutions are just as damaging to the lining of the eye.

Routine Eye Care Has Never Been More Important

Do not be afraid or nervous to visit our office in Kitchener due to the ongoing pandemic. A collective effort is being made across the medical industry to stop the spread of the virus. There are shorter waiting periods, improved safety procedures, and mandatory screening for all patients, so your optometrist’s office is as safe as it can be.

Don’t neglect your monthly or yearly checkups at the expense of your vision. Symptoms like pain, redness, floaters, flashes, and decreased vision should not be ignored as they suggest a serious eye problem.

If you experience any of these or other symptoms, don’t hesitate to talk to us or book an appointment with a licensed optometrist in Kitchener.

Your Optometrist in Kitchener- Are you ready for Spring?

Eye exams are an important part of maintaining your general health. Everybody should get an eye exam on a semi-regular basis, whether they wear glasses or not. This is because your eyesight tends to degrade over time. An optometrist in Kitchener will be able to determine if your vision has worsened and whether glasses are necessary.

The Importance Of Regular Eye Exams

Checking your vision isn’t the only point of an eye exam. There are numerous eye-related diseases that an optometrist will look for, such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. The quicker such diseases are diagnosed, the faster that you can do something about it to prevent them from hurting your vision further. Additionally, your the health of your eyes can give optometrists an idea about your general health. Issues with your eyes can often indicate other problems. As such, an optometrist can often identify problems such as lupus, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure during an eye exam.

How Often Should You Get An Eye Exam?

Even if you do not have issues with your vision or symptoms of possible eye diseases, you should still visit an optometrist in Kitchener Waterloo for an eye exam every few years. The older you are, the more often you should schedule an appointment.

  • Adults between 20 and 64 years of age should have an eye exam every two years.
  • Adults over the age of 64 should have an eye exam once a year.

Of course, if you already have a prescription for corrective lenses (such as if you need contacts or glasses), then you should schedule an appointment for an eye exam annually.

Schedule An Eye Exam This Spring

We recommend getting an eye exam in the winter or early spring time. This is because the weather tends to be dry and cold, which can lead to common issues such as dry and itchy eyes. Such symptoms could change the outcome of your eye exam, which is why for a general checkup, we recommend waiting until spring. Not to mention that this provides the best opportunity to pick up some new frames or some new designer sunglasses that you can show off as the weather changes for the better. To schedule an eye exam with an optometrist in Kitchener, contact us at us at KW Vision Centre today.

By regularly visiting your optical store in Kitchener, it will help you to detect, diagnose and mitigate any hereditary, age-related, environmental, and other eye challenges for you and your family. So, what more does finding a high-quality and caring optical store in Kitchener do for you and your family?

Comprehensive Eye Exams and Eye Care

Getting regular comprehensive eye exams is one of the most fundamentally important steps you can take to protect your eyes and keep your visual system healthy as you age. And as stated above, eye exams are not a preserve of the people who wear glasses and contacts. Once you find the right optical store in Kitchener for your family, your specialists will schedule regular exams based on age and other circumstances. During each of these eye exams, your specialist will take a good hard look at the health and well-being of your entire visual system to detect, diagnose, prevent or address any possible issues. On top of that, eye exams present a window into your overall health and can help unearth other possible health issues.

Lifelong Eye Care for the Whole Family

Some eye problems such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration are genetic and if left unmanaged could lead to blindness. By cultivating a relationship with a high-quality and caring optical professional, you can rest easy knowing that your eye specialists are keeping track of such issues as your family history, persistent eye conditions, prescription eyewear, and the overall health of your visual system. This means they can detect and manage any possible issues early enough so they do not perpetuate into the future.

The ideal optical store in Kitchener will also offer helpful advice on how to protect your eyes and how to improve your overall sight wellness. They will offer tips on eating a vision-protecting diet, managing screen time, proper outdoor eye-wear, the importance of managing existing health conditions among other issues that promote your overall well-being. On top of that, your optical store in Kitchener will also be sure to recommend you to specialists if the need arises.

Bring Your Family to an Eye Specialist in Kitchener

It goes without saying that having good eyesight is vital to living a happy and fulfilling life. That said, it is also true that it is quite easy to forget or sometimes overlook the need for having regular visits to your eye specialist in Kitchener. There is also the notion that visiting an eye specialist is only a preserve of those who have eye conditions, eyewear, or only when something does actually go wrong with one’s eyes – nothing could be further from the truth. Visiting your eye specialist in Kitchener should be a regular part of your life – part of your family routine.

Whether young or old, whether you have eyewear or not, every member of your family needs to have their eyes checked regularly. Your eye specialist in Kitchener will determine how often you need to come in for a checkup depending on several factors including age, any existing issues, possible risks, and so on. These regular visits will save you lots of time, money, and pain by detecting potential eye problems before they become an issue and averting them. With that, here are the benefits of bringing your family to an eye specialist in Kitchener.

Maintain a Healthy Vision System

There is a multitude of common and uncommon eye problems that an eye exam can detect including glaucoma. Glaucoma is a serious and damaging eye condition that progresses slowly and which can be easily detected early with regular eye exams, and then managed. You can also test for myopia, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. With eye health concerns, early detection is key.

Correct and Improve your Vision

Perhaps your vision is good – after all, you only squint once in a while but can generally see quite well. Still, it is crucial that you get regular eye checkups. The body does a very good job of adapting itself to different circumstances. What you have gotten used to as occasional squinting could be a sign of another issue. There is also the fact that your vision tends to decline slowly as you age. Whether you have eyewear or not, routine vision screening will help you improve the eyesight of every family member and improve their quality of life. It is also a great opportunity to renew your prescriptions.

Catch Health Issues

They say the eyes are a window to the soul – we say they are also a window into the body. Getting regular eye checkups can be vital in detecting other serious health issues. It could offer the first clue to severe chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and liver disease among others. These and other illnesses can be picked up from disparities in the appearance of the retinal blood vessels and their blood supply.

With summer upon us, we can finally have more fun outdoors with friends and family. While being active in the sun offers many benefits, it also presents unique risks – particularly to your skin and eye health. Did you know that your eyes are ten times more susceptible to UV damage than your skin? Well, now that you know that, it is important to ensure that you and your whole family have the right eyewear from preferred optical store in Kitchener to protect your eyes this summer.

Protection for the Whole Family

The first step to protecting your eyesight and that of your family during this summer is to consult your optical store in Kitchener. Your Optical Store in Kitchener will perform a regular eye examination to monitor the health of your eyesight and look out for any signs of UV damage to the eyes in addition to underlying conditions. The examination will cover your eyes’ internal and external health at length through meticulous tests done with the latest technology.

With results from this examination and consultation, your Optical Store in Kitchener will provide a personalized recommendation for eye protection that takes into account each family member’s vision needs and lifestyle.

High Quality Eye Wear for the Summer

Depending on various factors such as age, lifestyle, vision needs, and more, each family member will have different requirements for their eye protection. At KW Vision Centre, we have a highly professional and friendly team of eye specialists as well as an extensive collection of eyewear including designers as Oakley, Ray Ban, Salvatore Ferragamo, Coach, Versace, Dior, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Silhouette, Adidas, and many more. First things first, if you wear prescription sunglasses, we strongly recommend that you invest in a pair of prescription sunglasses as well. In addition to being a nice fashion statement, prescription sunglasses will greatly protect your eyes through the season. We have a wide range of prescription sunglasses in the latest styles that offer the convenience and freedom of UV protection combined with clear vision.

Even with perfect eye health, your Optical Store in Kitchener can recommend polarized sunglasses to maintain your eyesight. Polarized sunglasses provide superior glare protection by eliminating reflective light that can harm your eyes.
